If there is one thing I'm really proud of... (my 99th Post)

Hello guys!

Before the month ends, I thought I should share (more like haolian) the one thing that I'm really proud of.

Today, I'm gonna share with you about my aspirations/ambitions in life. Yea, I know it is totally out of the blog's theme or "direction", but I just felt that it is necessary to share this motivation.

I am pretty sure that since young, all of us have had different ambitions. Some of us, stuck it throughout the years, some of us fumble upon new ambitions and decided to change, and some of us just don't know what we want after gazillion years of studying and working.

I remember being young, I have had so many different type of ambition. Ambitious or fickle minded, I was both. I had wanted to be a lawyer (my mum's influence) because I loved to talk, I enjoy arguing, regardless if it was with sense, or without any form of sense. I would walk around with a huge black file that looked something like this

Which I had a lot of construction paper (coloured) with present wrappers inside to make it looked like documents, but way cooler, cause they were pretty papers.
I think I was only 7 - 8 only during that period. It was after my Barbie Doll / Sailor Moon Period. I would walk around with the file, in my bedroom, pretending that I was in court trying to fight for a case for my teddy bears.

So as the years past, I grew up, started watching Spice Girls, listening to Britney Spears (I love them both to bits!) and the passion of being a lawyer gradually diminished. Grades weren't fantastic,  and it was a toss between 4 or 5 years of studying.

The latter was chosen in the end.

I learnt a lot during my Secondary School days, I think they mould me into who I am today, and be more acceptive and more defensive to the society's critiques and compliments. It half-shaped me to who I am today. I have met friends who stuck through me through my thickest and thinness of life.

So during my teens, I started to enjoy my Home Economics session, where I get to cook. Ok, this story, kinda goes way back. I started cooking (just) rice itself, when I was 9 years old. And there is a Chinese believe/saying that says that "Whether a person can cook well or not, is dependent on whether he/she can cook plain rice". (And I do agree, after being 24 now).

So later, I decided that I wanted to be a Tze-Char Store Owner. That is because I loved loved loveeee creating new dishes. But somehow along the way, because my dog's condition was getting worse, and I was about 15 then, I decided to take biology so that I can be a Veterinarian. (Ok before that, I wanted to be hairstylist also, because I loved my naturally brown hair and used to be very proud of it).

So yes, the goal of being a Veterinarian, stuck with me for a good 2 years, actually a lot more. Until O'levels. I knew I had to get into a Junior College in order to pursue this ambition of mine. But I failed to get into one. I was so tiny bitsy close. And I thought I could have made it, but I didn't.

Disappointed, Life threw me into a course called Marketing. I was in majoring in Marketing at Nanyang Polytechnic, but I had never forgotten about my ambition of being a Vet. I had never felt so passionate about something so long (then).

Despite the amount of ups and downs that I had gone through during my polytechnic life, I had never given up. I had always held on to the thought that I'm going to make it someday. Always believed in myself and always kept my head held high. But during the journey to where I am today, I discovered, I was capable of certain skills. I wouldn't say I was damn good at it, but I was adequately getting the thumbs up for what I have been doing.

After I graduated, there was a little time before University started, and I must say, it wasn't an easy path for me on the University route. I wasted a year, in comparison with my peers. During that period, I thought to myself, since I was so keen in being a Vet, why don't I go intern somewhere or work somewhere where there are animals that I can attend to. So just one fine day, driving down a road, I saw the Animal Recovery Veterinary Centre. Gave them a call, and I was given a job.

It was also where I met my bestest (不要脸) friend - "Keong" or Pei en. But I refuse to call her Pei En lah. Our friendship is known for me shouting her name down the hallways/stairs of ARVC and her knowing that confirm is me. Because I kinda am the only one who does that.

This is the most chio photo of her, that I TOOK. When we were at JB

Part of the Family

We were travelling as a half group to JB for our tiny "retreat"

They were my family. My Secondary Family

I had the best day of my life there. Because I didn't had to really work with humans. And even if they were humans, they were more like a family.

I felt completed after working at ARVC, though I often looked back and felt that I could have stayed longer, if it wasn't for the monetary issues with school commencing. I had really loved what I was doing and the people I was working with. Though there were endless of changes, interns coming in and out. I was experiencing the time of my life. Fulfilling what I had always wanted to do all these while. It was also here that I realise, maybe Life was right, I wasn't ready to be a vet.

Before you know it, it is this blog that I'm writing down these thoughts and gratitudes that I have for those who have entered and exited my life. Those who have been there with me when I was crying or feeling extremely angry about some small issues in life. Those who expressed their love for me. Though your names are not mentioned here, it doesn't mean you're insignificant. All of you mean something to me, then and now. Regardless (Like my cousins for example, who if you refer to the following picture, very kindly left a head space for me, cause I wasn't there to tour the Google Office ): of JFK). If you know me well, I'm very proud of my two coussies, and I always talk about them. They are my life. And they know it better than I do.

Both looking extremely tired. Val on the left and Mei on the Right
So yes. There is this blog, and I met this amazing girl called Juvena Chia too.Who I have went to several countless events with. Someone who would probably remember Andrea as the crazy person. Haha.  (She is 5 years younger than me leh. What kind of logic is this!)

Yup. So if there is one thing I'm really proud of right now, it would be this blog. It marks the best memories of my life. It is where I share my happiest moment in life with you readers. Vanitylavie has come a long way from twaddle.

Actually, the purpose of writing about my ambitions, is because I have recently made up my mind to set up a nail parlour. And if you have been following my instagram, you would have notice my mediocre skills....

And yes, this has been going on for quite a while. I recall this passion of mine since I was 21. I was gifted the following:

So If I count my years correctly, it is going to be 3 years since I stuck with this passion. And thanks to technology and new polishes, the journey of my life and experiences, I occasionally get inspired and design my own nails. I try to do it on a weekly basis now. and yes... I love what I'm doing. And  nothing feels more proud than having people compliment my nails design. Cause I know they are one of a kind and I designed them. Nothing feels more accomplished than this.

All I'm trying to say is, it is ok to be fickle-minded. It is ok to not know what you want in life, cause you will find it eventually. It may start off as a passion, as something you always do. Sometimes you won't get the chance, or won't be able to reach that ambition of yours, but it is ok to start small, start young or even old. It is never too late. Keep the fire burning in you my dear readers. Don't give up regardless of what the society think. Don't let other voices enter your head. Trust yourself.

Live life, and be happy.

a quote I have always lived by since my Secondary School days was
"Nothing is easy before it is difficult"

Today, I am truly happy with the achievements (though little). In fact, I'm proud of who I have become.

Thank you everyone for being part of my life. I truly appreciate every moment of it - good or bad.

Love
Andrea

**this entry marks my 99th Post in this blog. I know the norm is to celebrate your 100 post. But 99th in Chinese is "jiu jiu". And I want this blog to live "jiu jiu" and be reminded of how proud I am when I'm old. (:

[Event Review] The Weekly's Look Good, Feel Great Masterclass by Olay!

Co-organised by Women's Weekly & Olay, I was kindly invited to attend "The Weekly's Look Good, Feel Great Masterclass" on 30th March 2013, Four Seasons Hotel Crescent Ballroom

Here are some photos from the event.

Myth Buster by Larry Yeo

Larry Yeo busting myths with his magic hands!

Ms Barbara Koh, Editor of Women's Weekly

Olay Senior Scientist, David Khoo, to share about the latest skincare technology for the All New Olay Regenerist range

This is the best I could get of the Superiority Live Demo! Decided to make it a .gif, so you can save the trouble of scrolling down endless photos. What happened during this demonstration was a about 5ml syringe was use to scoop up two different product - Product X and of course the New Regenerist Micro-Sculpting Cream and placed in two bottles; shake & test its solubility. The Olay cream obviously mixed really well with the water and it was mentioned that a good skin care product is usually more water-dispersed. Because our skin main composition is water, and more water-dispersed product can carry ingredient deeper in skin layers.

The Olay Regenerist Eyelash Duo!

With special thanks to Cozycot and Olay for sponsoring these products for me to test on. Would definitely do another write-up on the (new) products that I received - Olay Regenerist Revitalising serum & the Olay Regenerist Eyelash Duo

[Product Review] Belif - belif in truth

Hello there pretty(s)!

So just the other day, I was at Plaza Singapura purchasing my manager's birthday present, and chanced upon the store that my cousin was raving about - Belif at the new wing of Plaza Singapura. I wanted to purchase what my cousin recommended - The Aqua Bomb for my boss, but was out of stock. Extremely convinced by the reviews from my cousin and of course trying out at the counter, made me purchase the actual size of the product, which I collected a few days later!

What is the brand all about?
(screenshots from their website)

(screenshots from their website)

(screenshots from their website)

For the products that I have tested, all have promised that there is no addition of Mineral oil, Synthetic fragrance, Synthetic dyes, Synthetic preservatives, Animal-origin ingredients.

When I made my purchase, the sales assistance was so kind to throw in so much more of the other products that were sold on the shelves. Because I spent more than $80SGD ( I bought the Aqua Bomb and Moisturising Bomb), I was entitled to the following products:

What have I tried and my reviews?

1. Hungarian Water Essence

"This essence contains hydration secrets of the legendary Hungarian Water that enabled Hungarian Queen Elizabeth to maintain her beauty into old age. This product is applied cool like a spritz of water, and clings to the skin lightly without stickiness, prolonging suppleness and softness"

VLV: Pumping the product out was easy breezy. Unlike several serum/essence out there, the product isn't oily at all. It comes off very light and glides on easily on the face. Allowing the essence to be absorbed very efficiently!

2. The True Cream - Aqua Bomb - $54SGD
"With Napiers aqua formula containing Lady’s Mantle, often called “a woman’s hydrating herb,” this refreshing gel cream supplies instant moisture to the skin while forming a protective layer that wraps the skin in comfort."

VLV: As I scooped the product out from the bottle, I thought it was going to be really sticky and difficult for the product to penetrate into my skin. But I was extremely wrong. Just see the picture. It requires one to spread then pat the 'excess' product into the face. Just look! It doesn't shine with flash on! Which give it extra brownie points! ♥♥♥

Following my cleansing regime, last night I tried the above two steps and I must say, it was so refreshing. My face finally felt like it was hydrating and breathing well!

3. First Aid Overnight Skin Regeneration Mask

"A sleeping mask with a natto-like texture that provides intensive nourishment and restores skin vitality overnight. With Napiers anti-aging formula, this mask regenerates dull and exhausted skin and improves its elasticity while helping restore firmness."

VLV: Over the weekends, I was complaining about how troublesome putting a proper mask was (apply mask, wait 20minutes, wash off, skincare regime - so tiring), *now scratch that* the first thing that came to my mind was to try the mask that I had the deepest impression of amongst the rest of the products that I was given the other day. It was the First Aid Overnight Skin Regeneration Mask! Because I was given a sample product, I didn't know what was the amount to apply! The product smells a little "ginger-ish"/ "lemon grass-ish". It is a tad bit heavy/thick (in comparison with Laneige sleeping mask pack). Sticky too!

Because I squeezed so much for my entire face I decided to not waste the excess and started to spread it on my knees and my elbows (always neglected by many). The next day, when I woke up and washed my face together with my usual morning routine, I have to say, my face feels so soft and hydrated! - Seriously, not kidding.

Would I recommend to others?
Currently, I have only tried the above mentioned. As you can see from the picture, I have a few products that I have yet to try. But I would definitely recommend the Aqua Bomb & the First Aid Overnight Skin Regeneration Mask to everyone I know. You know how sometimes we are just plain lazy, and it is the day of the week where you need to do your mask to replenish the hydration level on your face? Now you don't have to fret about waking up to extremely oily skin or millia seeds in months. These two products can really cater to dehydrated skin!

[Food Review] Coffee Stars by Dao

Coffee Stars by Dao

Hot chocolate with Marshmallow -  SGD $6.50 || Pad-thai Rice Noodle (Shrimp) - SGD $14.00 || Pandan Chicken - SGD $14.00 || Mushroom Soup - SGD $7.00 || Iced Chocolate with Whipped Cream - SGD $7.50 || Tom Yum Rice Noodle (Chicken) - SGD $14.00

Last thursday, I celebrated my 1 year 1 month and 3 days anniversary with Ms Juvena Chia. Our friendship comes through this blog. And if it wasn't for the Maybelline event that was held last year 25th February, I would never have met this lady who is so much younger than me, and forever making me feel like I'm some old sister. (Ok, but I'm very sure she agrees I don't act like one lah, 70% of the time I am on the funny side)

Reservations were made, as I would have expected more turnout, giving that the following day was a public holiday. But nope, no queues when we were there at about 7.15pm on a Thursday evening. The menu had a great variety, from your standard thai dishes of tom yum goong (soup) to standard western dishes and delightful cakes and coffee offerings as well.

Reviews:
The Hot Chocolate was DA BEST I have ever had. Seriously! It is a whole good wholesome of generous Cocoa Powder with nicely semi-melted Marshmallows! Extremely delicious for me. I would definitely choose this as a to-go, or even a good afternoon tea catch-up with a close friend! The texture of the drink was just right for me! Extremely pleased for the amount I paid. Beats all the local or even "famous" coffee houses hot chocolate!

I had the Pad-Thai that night. I'm never a huge fan of thai food, and am very selective to thai food especially their noodles. I have had really awful tasting ones where the noodle is either extremely sticky to one another or too oily. But this was just right. Would have appreciated if it was a little bit spicier. But the spicy level is suited to the public at large. So if you're like me, just request for chilli powder for that extra kick! (:

The highly raved Mushroom Soup (soup of the day on the menu) however was the biggest disappointment to me. The only highlight was the fact that it had really good croutons to go with it. The croutons really brought out the taste of the mushroom.

The Pandan Chicken meat texture was just nice for me. It wasn't overcooked but just right (personal preference I like to have my meat in a harder form than too soft, I prefer the breast meat to the ribs or thighs.) Along with the meat wrapped in pandan leaves, were sauces of chilli and sweet sauce. I am very sure they did drizzle a little lime/lemon in the sauce to rid off any oily after-taste.

VanityTrove April 2013 - Spring Update! + *secret*

*woof woof* and endless barking is how my vanity troves get greeted 99% of the time!

Here are the individual items in my trove!

Visible Whitening Multi-Targeted UV Shield BB Cream SPF 30 PA ++ -- S$80 (125ML)

This protective daytime beauty balm provides high protection from sun and pollution as it instantly hydrates and brightens skin. Contains melanin-inhibiting and anti-aging technology to fight the appearance of discolourations and fine lines. Imparts a smooth, even toned look and a soft, translucent glow. In three skin-enhancing shades.

VLV: Easy application, smooth & sweet smelling! However, upon flash text, it is a tad bit shiny for me! The coverage is pretty light in my opinion.

Visible Whitening Melanin Control Night Capsules -- S$140 (50 Capsules)

This high performance night time serum in a capsule delivers potent natural hop extract to intercept melanin synthesis at every phase, diminishing excess pigmentation and the appearance of uneven skin tone. See a profoundly visible transformation: skin looks smooth, crystal clear and translucent – glowing with confidence.

VLV: I have never used such products in capsules before, so this is my very first! I secretly think that they are little genies at night! The serum texture is light and non-sticky!

Visible Whitening Smoothing Cleanser -- S$55 (125ML)

This gently foaming cleanser with enzymatic micro-beads instantly removes dead surface cells, reducing the appearance of dark spots and uneven skin tone. Melts into skin to effectively cleanse, purify and detoxify. Skin looks instantly brighter, more even toned and glowing. Serum-filled capsules contain SpectraBright™ technology and plant-derived extracts to help prevent melanin synthesis.

Next up in my troves are from...

DR.CI:LABO BB Perfect Cream White 377+ -- S$67 (30G)
An All-In-One BB Cream that consists of Beauty Essence + Facial Cream + Makeup Base for Brightening + Concealer + Makeup foundation all-in-one tube!  The word "WHITE 377" is a latest dermatological breakthrough ingredient for skin brightening, while "EGF" is to assist with the skin's rejuvenation.

VLV: Knowing that it is a whole new formula, I decided to give it a try, just the other day when I went for the Olay Masterclass (will blog about it soon). The product has a light blue-ish/grey-ish undertone to it, which I thought would made my face look dull, but surprisingly not! It has very very very coverage, able to cover the redness on the sides of my nose and last me for a good 4 - 5 hours. Dont feel dry or even cakey during application!

DR.CI:LABO Super Cleansing EX -- S$50 (100G)
A Gel-like makeup remover that cleanser without losing the skin's moisture level. Works well with all skin-type and all types of makeup, dirt and other impurities! Upon application, the gel will transform into oi, and with its gentle warming effect, it will soften the dead skin cells and lift the make up away from the pore. Leaving clear pores!!!

DR.CI:LABO Super Washing Foam EX -- S$47 (120G)
A facial cleanser that promises to moisturise WITHOUT the use of fragrance and colouring substances, mineral oils and is Paraben free. Foams up to a creamy texture, easy for application too!

DR.CI:LABO Aqua Collagen Gel Super Moisture EX -- S$130 (120G)| S$65 (50G)
This product is da bomb!! Because of how lazy I can get after work, usually after cleansing, I'd prefer to slap on an ALL-IN-ONE cream that doesn't need me to do much at the end of the day. (I know, I will regret this someday, but till that day comes lah). It is a one time application after makeup remover + facial wash. The naturally derived gel has the ability to preserve high moisture levels in our skin! It moisturises both inner and outer of our skin.

VLV: Product isn't sticky, and doesn't give the extreme glow or oily look after application! Best part was, when I woke up after applying the product, my face felt so soft and pump. SUPER BOMB!
