We visited during lunch time, at about 1230pm. And the entire coffee shop was really packed. Don't look for fancy restaurants or air-conditioned area. This place is authentic to the bones of the entire set up. Thankfully we still went ahead and fought against the strong sun.
So when we were there, it was really really busy already, and I have read somewhere online that after 2.30pm the tomyum soup will run out! So I hurriedly made a few decisions on the dishes that we wanted.. and (you have to write down the order yourself in their "shortcut language". Like Phad Thai is know as "PHAD" while Sambal Kangkong is known as.. "Veg"
Pretty interesting!
Here we have the Phad Thai & Vermicelli dish (Which I can't remember the actually name), but I wrote "Hoon".
Phad Thai - I only tried one mouth, and I have had really good phad thai in Bangkok before. And I must say, this isn't the best I have had. It is a tad bit spicy for me (I do eat spicy food like chilli padi), but this was a tad bit. Apart from that, there was too little peanut (but I guess you can always request for more) and a bit too sourish for me, though only one lime was squeezed. But still, a lot better than the restaurants out there!
Vermicelli - A very simple dish that anyone can whack up. But to be able to cook under such pressure and not have the vermicilli overcooked was already a masterchef dish! Generous amount of Eggs and Beansprouts (Tau Gay). A non-spicy dish to balance up the meal!
Both dishes were priced at SGD $ 3.50 each.
Next up was the star of the entire lunch.
The Tom Yum Soup. The ingredients in the tom yum soup varies. You can order just plain white fish, or just fried fish, or seafood. Alternatively, you can order the mixed fish soup which was what I ordered eventually to have the best of both world! (:
The soup was deeeeeeeeeelish!!!!! Super super super deeeee-leeeeeee-cioussss.
My god, I could have downed the whole bowl if not for being so full. It tasted just right. It was very refreshing, had large amount of white onions, tomato, fishes, parsley and coconut milk. If you are lactose intolerant, I think you may have to skip this, cause it was really shiok to the max. I can't describe it. You really need to taste it!
Tom Yum Soup - SGD $3.50 / $ 4.50 / $ 5.50
The Omlette that I read on hungrygowhere -was a must order. Look at the golden crips at the edge of the egg. Goodness. So crispy.
What came as a surprise, initially I would have thought it would just be plain eggs fried, but nope! We discovered french onions in it. And if you love home cooked food, your parents have bound to have cooked this at least once in their entire life. This was cooked to PERFECTION.
The eggs were so fluffy, and juicy. I don't even know if it is appropriate to say that the eggs were juicy. But they really were! It was so so so so so so so good.
Fried Omelette - SGD $3
Can you see the omlette's onion peeking out of the egg? Goodness. $3bucks only leh!
Next up was the Fried kang kong, or some would call it the morning glory vegetable! Just looking at how fresh the vegetables are, already turn my appetite on like crazy. I love fresh vegetables that are really really green. It was so so so so so delicious, once again. They were fried with what I believed was bean paste, dried chilli and generous amount of garlic. Non oily at all. It was perfect. Just nice for me. I could have whacked the whole plate by myself with a bowl of rice. Per-Fec-To.
Kang Kong - SGD $3 (usually this portion is charged for like $6/$8 at a normal local tze char store. Thus this is really a steal!
Both bud tay and I were so full, I couldn't even finish my plate of vermicilli. Next time we should just order plain rice! Or try the pineapple rice. Cause it looked so gooodddd.
